Our 24-day NASDU Level 4 Explosive Detection Dog Handlers Course is for handlers not requiring their own Explosive Detection Dog. You will be trained using a fully trained explosive detection dog for the course duration. The 24- day course (handling a fully trained edd) will join our current 32-day course (training with a green dog) on day 9. Both courses will then merge and be run as one group.
The NASDU Level 4 National Award for Explosive Detection Dog Handlers aims to provide the learner with the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required to ensure the provision of a professional level of service as an explosive detection dog handler. This Award has been developed by NASDU to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOS’s) for a Security Detection Dog Handler and the training requirements contained in BS 8517-2:2016, (in that) it is an assessment of the learners (handlers) ability to read the indications given by a dog and to meet the required performance criteria.
For Whom Suitable
This programme meets the requirements of those learners who have experience as drugs Detection dog handlers, general purpose dog handlers, door supervisors or security officers who wish to become explosive detection dog handlers. It would also be suitable for members of HM Armed Forces, Police or Prison Service who wish to take on an explosive detection dog handler role in the private sector. It’s also suitable for none UK personnel of the Armed Forces, Police, Emergency Services or Private Security who wish to take on an explosive detection dog handler role in their country of origin. The course is always open to novice dog handlers looking to start a new career in private security dog work. We will only supply training and / or dogs to countries that do not have sanctions imposed on them by the UK, UN or the EU and after gaining guidance from the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth Office. Due to health considerations this
program is not suitable for women who at the time of training are pregnant.
NASDU and externally accredited by High Field Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC) and externally endorsed by the Institute of Munitions Clearance and Search Engineers(IMCSE).
24 days split into two modules of 8 days of module 1 and 16 days of module 2 with a break in-between. Ensuring a minimum of 150 guided learning hours (GLH’s). GLH’s are recorded hours of direct training given to an individual learner and not the duration of the course.
The programme is flexible with a mixture of theory and practical tuition and is made up of 3 units all of which are compulsory (see content).
All learners should hold an appropriate S.I.A. license (unless exempt) and should be trained and competent as a security officer. The learner should also be competent in basic dog handling and animal husbandry and preferably completed formal training. Learners who have
proven explosive detection dog handling experience as a Police, a Prison Officer or a Member of HM Armed Forces may apply for accreditation of prior learning (APL) of up to 50 GLH’s.
Assessment shall be carried out by an independent Approved NASDU instructor / trainer; internal moderation shall be carried out by NASDU. The mode of assessment shall be by practical assessment, by question and answer sessions and by a written examination. Learners whose final assessments are with a dog who successfully indicates the presence of a number of given substances that are real explosives and not pseudo may apply for additional certification as an NASDU Explosives Detection Team.
Our instructors are current NASDU accredited and either former or serving ACPO or military instructors. The course is
primarily based on the ACPO system and course content. In addition and specialising in the hostile environment elements of the course we have a specialist handler, who has a number of year’s operational experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The dog must possess the suitable drive required and had basic obedience and environmental training and will search for a ball or such like. It is strongly recommended that learners who are attending the course with their own dogs are assessed prior to commencement of training for which additional GLH’s may be identified. Please note if you bring your own dog on the course we can not guarantee his suitability and we reserve the right to remove the dog from the training program should we deem it unsuitable. In these circumstances no course fees are refundable. Hence, it’s in your best interest to obtain a suitable dog. Should the handler and or dog not achieving all of the practical assessments in the time allowed it may mean additional training time is required or the handler carrying out continuation training in his own time and returning at a later date to be reassessed.
This is a handler qualification and is 32 days in duration which may or may not be long enough to train a novice dog.
In these circumstances you will be encouraged to attend continuation training days until assessment as a team is achieved. Please note If you are brining your own dog on a UK based course and it successfully completes the final team assessment you will be invoiced a dog training fee surcharge of £500.00 which is due for payment prior to certificates being
issued We can also provide fully trained or part trained dogs which would greatly increase your chances of passing out as a team in the time allocated.
